At the processing plant, increases in the amount of usable marble resulting from cutting processes can be achieved through use of innovative cutting tool technologies. For instance, extra thin cutting discs can be used to minimize the waste material.

The latter can be used in several applications and in various sizes. For instance, marble by-products crushed as aggregates can be used in cement, in the construction industry, in road-port-rail construction, in terrazzo (mosaic) installations and in agglomerate stones.

Karaca and Onargan (2007) applied the critical path method to a marble processing plant and proposed a new production plan for medium-scale marble processing plants in order to optimize the operational costs of operation and to effectively manage time.

Marble quarrying and processing can be further improved by adopting a series of measures that relate to the organizational structure of the marble-producing company and to specific management aspects of both day-to-day and long-term operation.

The implemented methodology is based on the identification of energy demanding processes related to marble production in a specific plant, definition of appropriate operation/installation parameters that control the above processes, and evaluation of the effect of such parameters on the energy consumption per final product.

The abrasive cut-off discs customarily used in the process feature diamond cutting segments, and are associated with high rates (over 60%) of work piece material removal (Glatzel, 2004; Seiffert et al., 2010). Innovative tool design can reduce this removal volume in the marble production by a reduction in the steel blade and segment width.
